What are Java, J2ME, and Java technology-enabled applications?
| A:
Java is a programming language invented by Sun Microsystems. J2ME (also known as KJava and Java 2 Micro Edition) is designed specifically to work on small devices such as Nextel phone models. Small devices are typically defined by limited memory and processing power as well as display size. Java technology-enabled applications are J2ME applications that can be run on a Nextel Java technology-enabled phone.Back To Top >>

Q:
What are the types of J2ME applications?
| A:
There are two types of J2ME applications:
Local applications are stand-alone applications that run on a wireless phone without accessing external data sources through the Nextel Packet Data Network. Examples of local applications include calculators or games.
Network aware applications interact with the Nextel Packet Data Network. Unlike local applications, network aware applications can access an external data source. An example of a network aware application is an email application that resides on the phone, retrieves addresses stored within the application, and sends email to addressees via the Nextel Packet Data Network. To run network aware applications on your Nextel phone, you need to subscribe to one of the Data Service Packs (unless you already have a subscription to an Unlimited Wireless PC Access Plan).

Q:
Are WAP and J2ME the same thing?
| A:
No, WAP and J2ME are not the same. WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) relies on accessing Internet/Intranet content and applications in order to execute instructions. In this case, the phone only runs a browser that accesses information via the Nextel Packet Data Network. No content or application resides on the phone. If either a site or the network is down then the content or application cannot be used. It is similar to using Microsoft Internet Explorer to view Yahoo email.
Java technology-enabled applications reside on the phone and do not rely on accessing the Internet or Intranet. Java technology-enabled applications are available to the subscriber even if there is no access to the Nextel Packet Data Network. It is similar to running Microsoft Outlook or Microsoft Word on a PC. Back To Top >>

How do I download a Java technology-enabled application?
| A:
You can go to www.nextel.com/downloads to download digital items to your Nextel phone. These include Java-technology-enabled applications as such as ring tones and the latest phone software. Customers can select which digital items they would like and then update their phone(s) over the Internet.
Download Apps is a network aware Java technology-enabled application that allows Nextel subscribers to download applications over-the-air (OTA) without the use of a data cable. Nextel subscribers can select which applications they would like and purchase those applications online. After completing the shopping process, those applications can be accessed and downloaded OTA from the handset using Download Apps. To find out more, go to www.nextel.com/downloads. Back To Top >>
