FAQs: Mobile Application Manager

Q:  The phones on my account have a phone number but have restrictions on Incoming/Outgoing calls (CEL restrictions). Can I use MAM?
A:  Yes, assuming the phones meet the additional requirements, you can use MAM. However, each phone with CEL restrictions must have the phone number stored on the phone. To store the phone number, from the idle screen press the MENU key. Select MyInfo. Select Line 1 and enter the phone number if it does not appear.

Q:  Are there Network charges for downloading applications?
A:  No, application downloads are free for phones with a Standard Data Service Plan or Enhanced Data Service Plan. Fees may be associated with obtaining application licenses.

Q:  What is the ONE PHONE, ONE SIM Policy and why is it necessary?
A:  Due to licensing agreements, MAM requires that end-users always use the same SIM card with their phone and not swap SIM cards to other phones. MAM assigns applications to a phone (the physical device) and the corresponding phone number (stored on the SIM card). When these values do not match, because the SIM card has been moved to a different phone, problems occur with application distribution. When a SIM card is removed from a phone, the Java applications are not transferred to the new phone, The applications remain assigned to the original phone. Therefore, swapping SIM cards is not recommended.

Q:  Are there different levels of Administration?
A:  Yes, if you register as an Administrator for a Master Account, you will have access to all phones on the Master Account and all the accounts associated with that Master Account (typically called Sub-Accounts). If you register as an Administrator for a Sub-Account, you will only have access to those phones on the Sub-Account.

Q:  I have a custom application that was developed for my enterprise. Do I need to submit this application for certification through Nextel before distributing it to my employees?
A:  No. Certification through Nextel is not necessary if this is a custom application or one you have obtained directly from your vendor. However, it is highly recommended that you test the application thoroughly, especially if it uses the Nextel wireless packet data network. Applications that make inefficient use of the wireless network will cost you more in transport charges.

Q:  What does the "Number of Licenses" field mean when Uploading an Application?
A:  For an application developed internally or acquired from a 3rd party vendor, the "Number of Licenses" field is only useful for your tracking purposes. Typically you would enter an asterisk (*) in the field to indicate an unlimited number of available licenses.

Q:  Why do I need to enter the Program Space and Data Space of the application?
A:  These fields are provided as information to the end-user before the actual download occurs to help them determine if the phone has sufficient memory to accommodate the application.

Q:  What is the Deleted column in the Application Library?
A:  The Deleted column indicates licenses that are deleted and no longer available. Licenses may be deleted for the following reasons:
An application is assigned to a phone and later removed
An application is assigned and the phone is later deactivated from Nextel service or no longer meets the MAM eligibility criteria
You edit an IMEI field because the end-user's phone was upgraded or the associated SIM was swapped to a different phone

Q:  If I add a new phone to a distribution list, will the applications previously assigned to the distribution list automatically be assigned to this new phone?
A:  No, you must assign the application(s) to this new phone. If you have added multiple phones to the distribution list, consider re-assigning the applications to the entire distribution list. MAM recognizes which phones already have the applications assigned and avoids making duplicate assignments.

Q:  If I remove a phone from a distribution list, will MAM automatically remove the applications assigned to that phone as part of the distribution list?
A:  No, removing a phone from a distribution list does not automatically remove application assignments. The Administrator must remove the desired applications. Application licenses purchased from the store will be lost when you remove the application assignment.

Q:  If I remove an application from a distribution list, will the application assignment to each phone in that list also be removed?

Q:  Does MAM report which applications physically reside on the phone at a given time?
A:  MAM shows both applications that have been assigned, as well as applications that have been downloaded. This information can be found in Handset Administration > Application Details.

Q:  The IMEI field stays blank even after the application has been assigned and the user has run Download Apps. What should I do?
A:  The IMEI for that phone already exists within MAM as being associated with another phone number. The end-user may have swapped the SIM card to a different phone. The Administrator must edit the blank IMEI field and enter the correct IMEI. Editing the IMEI field will result in a loss of applications.

A:  Yes, applications assigned to the end-user will automatically be transferred from the old phone to the new one. You do not need to edit the IMEI field in this situation.
